What is Closed Cell Foam?
Closed-cell foam has varying degrees of hardness, depending on its density. A normal, closed-cell insulation or flotation urethane is between 2 and 3 pounds per cubic foot. It is strong enough to walk on without major distortion. Most of the cells or bubbles in the foam are not broken; they resemble inflated balloons or soccer balls, piled together in a compact configuration.This makes it strong or rigid because the bubbles are strong enough to take a lot of pressure, like the inflated tires that hold up an automobile. The cells are full of a special gas, selected to make the insulation value of the foam as high as possible.

The advantages of the closed-cell foam compared to open-cell foam include its strength, higher R-value, and greater resistance to the leakage of air or water vapor. The disadvantage of the closed-cell foam is that it is denser, requiring more material, and therefore, more expense. Even though it has a better R-value, the cost per R is still higher than open-cell foam. The choice of foam should be based on the requirements for the other characteristics - strength, vapor control, available space, etc.

About InsulStar

InsulStar is a high density, closed-cell spray foam insulation from NCFI Polyurethanes. A two-part liquid system is sprayed in place and quickly expands to fill all gaps and voids. It then cures to form a fully adhered, solid, monolithic insulation envelope. The resulting insulation barrier offers many benefits that standard fiberglass insulation cannot claim.

 
Efficiency. InsulStar’s R-value is about R-6.4 per inch, compared to fiberglass batting insulation which is about R-3.5. Its ability to stop air infiltration and eliminate convective looping saves an estimated 40% on energy bills.

Structural Rigidity. InsulStar also adds structural rigidity to the home. In a test conducted by the National Association of Home Builders Research Center, it was concluded that a 2x4 wall sprayed with polyurethane foam insulation had two times the racking strength of a wall filled with fiberglass batting insulation.

Green. In addition to its dramatic energy savings, InsulStar is formulated from renewable agricultural resources and uses a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly blowing agent with zero ODP. NCFI Polyurethanes was awarded the 2004 Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award, an international award from the EPA for their work in developing environmentally friendly SPF systems.

 
Comfort. The closed-cell, fully adhered structure of InsulStar forms a low-permeance air seal that blocks air infiltration, noise pollution and water vapor movement. In most cases, the need for additional air barriers and vapor barriers is eliminated. By controlling water vapor, condensation will not occur, thus eliminating the moisture to support mold growth. Additionally, InsulStar is blended with an anti-microbial to inhibit mold, mildew and bacterial growth.

Technical. InsulStar is a nominal 2.0 lb. /cu. ft. density, closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation that provides higher R-value per unit thickness than can be achieved with standard fiberglass insulation. (R-13 at 2 inches nominal.) SPF is produced from two specially formulated liquid components, which are precisely metered, heated, and pumped through pressure hoses to a mixing nozzle. The composite liquids are sprayed onto the surfaces to be insulated where it reacts, expands and cures to form a fully adhered, seamless, structural, solid insulating blanket. It also has a Class 1 Fire Rating.

Use InsulStar to Create an Environmental Envelope

 
InsulStar insulation provides an effective barrier against the transfer of heat, moisture and air. By installing InsulStar in exterior walls and between conditioned (wall space) and unconditioned spaces (i.e. attics), an environmental envelope can be created that will maximize your home’s energy performance, as illustrated in the diagram below.
