What is Open Cell Foam?
Open-cell foam is soft - like a cushion or the packaging material molded inside a plastic bag to fit a fragile object being shipped. The cell walls, or surfaces of the bubbles, are broken and air fills all of the spaces in the material. This makes the foam soft or weak, as if it were made of broken balloons or soft toy rubber balls. The insulation value of this foam is related to the insulation value of the calm air inside the matrix of broken cells. The densities of open-cell foams are around 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound per cubic foot.

Real R-value.  Icynene® maintains its performance (doesn’t sag or settle) with no loss of R-value over time.  It provides total thermal comfort today and for years to come, while conventional insulation can deteriorate as time passes and may no longer perform as it did when initially installed.  Selecting products that provide longevity, like Icynene®, can potentially eliminate the need for the installation/re-installation of additional material in the future.

ICYNENE LD-R-50™ is Icynene’s next generation of high-performance insulation.  ICYNENE LD-R-50™ is a renewable-based foam insulation and air barrier material that is responsibly made using castor oil and offers numerous environmental benefits. 

Castor oil has been used in place of a portion of the petroleum-based polyol.  ICYNENE LD-R-50™ exceeds the minimum renewable requirement for a bio-based material (testing in accordance with ASTM D 6866) and can contribute toward a building’s achievement of credits/points under various national green building standards, including LEED and the NAHB’s NGBS program.
